Sunday 5th October – Windsurf **** River Orwell at Levinngton – sunny periods.

Foil – 18.47 knot max, 17.44 knot ave., 12.24 knot hour, 16.24 knot mile, 34.21 km., 14.98 knot alpha.

Starboard Freeride 150 and a Evolution Freeride foil with a Naish Nalu 4.25.

With Storm Amy passing over Suffolk yesterday with winds gusting over 40 knots I decided to give windsurfing a miss but we didn’t waste the day as Mag and I had a lovely walk in the sunshine from The Dip to Felixstowe Ferry:) With less wind forecast for today and from the west it was a trip over to the River Orwell arriving at the marina at 8.45 to make the most of the 11 o clock high, in fact it was quite a high one too! I was expecting a few wingers to arrive at 9 but no one showed up, so I had the river to myself apart from half a dozen yachts racing in some challenging conditions, it was great to sail with them in the sunshine! The foil board was quickly set up and with the wind blowing straight down to river in front of the launch beach, gusting over 25 knots I rigged the smallest sail I had with my my old Naish Nalu 4.2 which proved OK for the session! I made a pigs ear of launching, I uphauled found my boom was too high so instead of sailing away from the bank I adjusted it ending up in the rocks and weed, I had to swim out into the marina channel and tried to waterstart but the wind was patchy here so I was fast approaching the marina wall so had to swim out again, I managed to waterstart and sail away by which time I was knackered! There was certainly no shortage of wind as I set off across the river with a good swell also running, it was windy in the middle of the river but you could gybe in flatter water each side of the river in slightly less breeze and did several runs in front of the marina slowly sailing downwind getting some nice gybes, in fact I didn’t go for another swim for the whole session! As I was using such a small sail I didn’t think I would make it down to Felixstowe docks as the wind is often lighter but I was wrong and had some cracking long runs to the docks, the water was lumpier but still great but with some really strong 30 knots gusts coming through which kept you on your toes:) I was getting knackered as the wind was strong and a good swell running so I beat back and landed with the water level still very high but I thought it best to call it a day as I had ahd a nice session inn the sunshine. I had my snack and took several pics of the racing yachts with my big lens before packing up, showering and was home to watch the second half of the Ipswich v Norwich football match which Ipswich won 3 – 1, the first time they have won the local derby in 16 years, in fact I was there with my two boys, my sister and Great Aunt a big Norwich fan!
Mag and I had a late afternoon stroll along Felixstowe prom, I had hoped to have a Birthday sail tomorrow but sadly the wind is not looking great, so we will have a have a picnic/walk somewhere nice instead!
